National Standards for Music Education

 

·         Standard 1: Singing alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music

·         Standard 2: Performing on instruments, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music

·         Standard 3: Improvising melodies, variations, and accompaniments

·         Standard 4: Composing and arranging music within specified guidelines

·         Standard 5: Reading and notating music

·         Standard 6: Listening to, analyzing, and describing music

·         Standard 7: Evaluating music and music performances

·         Standard 8: Understanding relationships between music, the other arts, and disciplines outside the arts

·         Standard 9: Understanding music in relation to history and culture

 

Standards 6-9 will be the emphasis for this course.

           Standard:  Listens to music or examines scores to describe the

                            elements (rhythm, melody, harmony, form, dynamics, 

                            and  timbre) of music from developmentally appropriate 

                            selections.

           Standard:  Listen to and describes musical genres from appropriate

                           examples, such as symphony, oratorio, and musical

                           theatre.

Music Appreciation I (MUAI)

Introduces elements of music. Covers terminology and idioms, perceptive listening and attitudes and appreciation. Establishes the skills necessary to become a literate consumer with the ability to speak and write about music.  The relationship between Music, history and society will be emphasized.  The key genres and periods and concert etiquette will be introduced.

Builds on level-one skills and understandings. Emphasizes an in-depth approach to music through score reading, class discussion  and independent listening. Encourages the development a lifelong interest in music. Builds skills of perception and discrimination in listening. The musical periods styles (genres), key pieces and composers will introduced.

 

Music Appreciation III (MUAIII)

Strengthens level-two skills. Emphasizes skills needed for the critical analysis of music. Provides knowledge and skills for

development of independent critiques using the electronic media. Introduces the study of Music Theory and Music Careers.

Grading Scale:  Weighted Averages (Board Policy)   MUSIC ACADEMICS

 

E or A  =  90% – 100%     E=  EXCELLENT- participates in almost all class activities, discussion boards, completes all individual assignments on time, demonstrates excellence  and clarity in writing descriptively about music.

 

S or B/C  =  89% - 70%        S=   SATISFACTORY- participates in most activities, discussion boards, completes most assignments and demonstrates skill in writing about music descriptively.

 

N or D  =  69% - 59%         N=   NEEDS IMPROVEMENT-participates in class activities inconsistently, does not complete assignments on time and doesnot  demonstrate adequate skill in writing about music descriptively.

 

U  or F =  below 58%          U=    UNSATISFACTORY- rarely participates in class activities, discussion boards, does not complete assignments, does not demonstrate skill in writing about music descriptively.

 

Grading Policy:  

 

1.      All class work and projects must be posted by midnight of the day that they are due.  If there is a problem and your work or response cannot be posted please e-mail the teacher.  Late postings will only be allowed after parental conference. 

 

2.      Late postings may result in the loss of a letter grade. 

 

3.      All Discussion Board responses are part of your grade and language used must be positive and G-rated.

 

4.      Credit must be given for all sources in your research project and reports.

Listening and Concert Attendance  50 % 

 

Listening Exams   25%  and Concert Reports 25%  (no more than 5 will be accepted for a grade but each student should attend as many live Symphonic, Opera or Musical Theatre concerts as they can)

 

Projects, Tests and Projects 50%

 

Weekly Assignments 10% Online Chat Discussions  5 % Final  Project/Presentation 5% Written Exams 25 % Composer Biography Report 5%
